2KAN is a research and development project which is part funded under the Information Society Technologies theme of the European Commission's Fifth Framework Programme.

It aims to address the new work items being developed within the JPEG 2000 Standard, with the goal of maintaining a major European presence in this process.

It will also add major enhancements to the public JPEG website, with the twin goals of encouraging a European dimension to the site, and allowing it to become self-financed through sponsorship and specific commercial services.
